Both of my girls have a "song". A song that I have been singing to them from the moment I knew I was pregnant. I have rocked them to sleep singing their song more times than I can count and each time is as special as the first time I sang their song to them after they were born. And each time I sing these songs to them they instantly recognize it and calm themselves no matter the situation. Sometimes, late at night, Piper's song was the only thing that worked to get her back to sleep. Do you have a song like that?
Finley's song:
Wildflowers by Tom Petty
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free
Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worries
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free
Piper's song: - this song was also sung in our wedding by a friend of mine.
The Water Is Wide (Traditional)
The water is wide, I can't cross over, and neither have I wings to fly.
Build me a boat that can carry two and both shall row, my love and I.
There is a ship and she sails the sea. She's loaded deep, as deep can be.
But not so deep as the love I'm in, I know not how I sink or swim.
Oh love is handsome and love is fine, the sweetest flower when first it's new.
But love grows old and waxes cold and fades away like Summer dew.
Build me a boat that can carry two and both shall row, my love and I,
And both shall row, my love and I.

I sing "My Girl" to both of my girls and "Peggy Sue" to the youngest whose name is Megan (we call her Meggie). There are many other songs as well, but these two come to mind as they aren't your typical nursery songs (i.e. Itsy Bitsy Spider, Happy and You Know It, etc.) Funny thing is before I became a mother I would never sing aloud. And if I did, I made sure no one was within earshot. Now I don't care who hears me. If it will entertain my two little ones for a couple of minutes, I'll sing and even do a silly jig no matter where we are. They don't care that I don't always know the words, that I sing offkey, or that I don't have any rhythm. Some day they will, I know. But for now, they love it and so do I.
p.s. Love your blog. Wish I was half as creative as you are. You kids will have great memories of all the stuff you made for them and with them.
hi jody! My singing before the girls was relegated to the shower and the car butt you're right, we sing all the time. My girls don't watch tv so the ipos is usually on and we are usually singing along with it. And PIper, well, she makes up her own songs ona regular basis so there is always something new to hear. I love the idea of sharing this with my girls.
