Self Portrait Tuesday

My first submission to Self Portrait Tuesday where the theme for May is "Introduce Yourself."

In honorofthis submissionI would like to revisit "10 things you may not know about me."

1. If I can't find any clean socks to wear to the gym (which happenspretty much all the time) I wear the least smelliest dirty socks I can find (usually the sock I previously wore and stuck into my sneakers after I took them off without untying the laces.)

2. When I was in gradeschool I owned (rented) the soda machine in my dad's office. We would buy the soda for cheap wherever it was on sale and I would stock the machine myself. I would also collect the money and count it all which was not my favorite thiong to do. This money was put into an account and funded my college life since I had a full ride.

3. I had a full scholarship to college including tutition and books.

4. I love showers and hate baths, something about sitting in water that is full of your own dirt and gunk...

5. Jason and I will celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary this month and a total of 8 years together in June. I'm very proud of that accomplishment.

6. I really like the tv show "Gilmore Girls"

7. my close friends and my family call me "Sha" and my brother corey calls me "Janet" because i used to have a snile babysitter when I was littel that called me janet all the time because I reminded her off her niece or someone.

8. right now I want to have 1-2 more children naturally and then adopt 2 more, although jason might not agree now, he will, you'll see.

9. I wear a t-shirt to bed

10. I am punch-you-in-the-stomach-take-your-breath-away in love with my girls

bingo

yesterday in the car Piper was singing and what came out of her mouth was a staggering rendition of her very own remix: BINGO meets Old MacDonald, the underground DJ Bug Mix...

There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o (yes she started out with the familiar as to draw you in)

B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, and Bingo was his name-o

and now it's time for a remix or the "hook"

(which reminds me of this guy that once wrote me this email defining what the term "hook" meant in the business world and how it is something that ropes you in and holds your interest and make you want to come back for more. And then he gave me what is probably one of the most get-you-right-in-the-gut compliments, "shannon, you are like my hook" although reading that right now to myself conjures up some other kind of definition of "hook" but that really wasn't the case and that compliment has stayed with me and makes me fuzzy inside when I think about it. what a sweet guy.)

(anyway, back to the remix)

There was a farmer had a pig and Bingo was his name-o
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, and Bingo was his name-o

and we went through all the animals in Old Macdonalds farm, each being named Bingo and each needing it to be spelled out in a very "outside" kind of voice.

maybe someday she'llget to work with Jimmy Jam and we can call her "Miss D-" if you're nasty.

what would you do?

so we were out and about this morning and Piper saw a rather overweight woman and she said to me in her somewhat shout/really loud voice:

"Mom, that woman has a really big tummy. Really really big tummy. Mom, do you see her? She has the really biggest tummy in the world. Mom! MOM! MOM! DO YOU SEE HER WITH THE REALLY BIG TUMMY?"

I'm sure the woman had to have heard her big 3 year old voice and I just kind of sunk inside mysef not knowing what to say or how to react or for the love of God just leave and flee...you know, fight or flight? fly fly fly!

Have you ever had to address something like this and if so, how did you go about the explanation to your child?

usually she just asks me if the lady has a baby in her tummy as a lot of our friends are pregnant at the moment and Piper has taken to walking around the house with a stuffed animal up her shirt calling it "the baby in my tummy."

and just because...here is one of my favorite pictures of my favorite bug:

observations

Sunday:

we decided to sit with my brother at church on sunday and just happened to be sitting behind a couple that both attended the same private school that I attended in junior high. They were not a couple then, but now they are engaged and nauseating. I swear they could not have been more annoyingly hilarious. It took all I had in me not to laugh during the prayers when she would nuzzle her head up into his neck with their arms wrapped around each other. Not only that but something that really ticks me off is when people (this couple included) can be chit chatting and totally oblivious to their surroundings...example: this couple is whispering and giggling back and forth with this other girl sitting next to them like they are at youth group or something and we are in the middle of the praise and worship and in their next breaths almost as if on cue they close their eyes and raise their arms and hands and assume the positing that is the badge of a "christian". I wanted to vomit all over them. Not only do I believe that this is most definitely not authentic worship, but they were distracting me from my worship and interfering with me preparing myself for the sermon and what God has for me to hear through the music and worship experience. So so so annoying. Not only that, but it is situations like these that lead me to the cynical belief that the whole worship experience is a manipulation of my emotions anyway because who can go from whispering "oh, did you see what she was wearing?" to on their knees crying and in awe of my God? I hate that I have become so cynical about these things, however; my relationship with my Father is authentic and real and rough and difficult and easy and loving and forgiving and all these other things that these "christians" rarely address because it is too sticky.

I did however, learn a few things...
1.) Our bodies here on earth are our tents as in they are temporary and will run down and fail us while our "mansion" waiting for us is not a literal physical "mansion" like a house but rather our glorified bodies we receive when we die...they are permanent. I never thought of it in that manner, I guess I always remembered my mom saying "well, I hope my mansion isn't next to so-n-so's mansion in heaven" and I thought it was an actual house like what we have on earth.

b.) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
1 John 4:18

just think about that for a minute...no fear in love. In other words, trying to scare the "hell out of" someone to get them to chose God is not the way to go because there is no fear in love and God is love so there is no fear in God. I also think this has an application when it comes to judging someone for a variety of issues: sexual orientation, race, their position on the social ladder, rich, poor, fat, skinny, whatever...there is no fear in love and we are called to love and show God's love...there is no fear in love.

Later on we went to my parents house for lunch and swimming. I'm glad that my girls know their grandparents, both sets, because I never had that, my grandfather didn't even know my name, it was always "sharon" or "girly" which we laugh about now, but it still kinda hurts. He was a very sad man and his life ended and it was very very sad and lonely because of how he had lived his life. He was buried in a suit that was left at a nursing home after another man died. His funeral was attended by only a handful and was sobering and made me think that I want to know my children and their children and so on. Anyway, we had fun with grammy and granpaw.

Monday:

Today was wonderful. Piper has started a gymnastics class that she does "all by myself." This little girl amazes me on a daily basis. She is becoming more comfortable in her own skin and becoming this lovely delightful child. I covertly watched her in the class and she was awesome. I couldn't believe all the things she could do and I was so so proud of her. That mama pride is somethin let me tell you, my heart was swelling up so much I was almost certain that is was going to burst. I love love love my girls.

goodnight. xoxo

gallery walk

I almost forgot. Tonight Jason and I are going to a gallery walk in our downtown Cocoa Village. Around 14 galleries will be opening their doors for us to stroll through and salivate over. They serve wine and snacks and there are give aways at each gallery. I'm really looking forward to it and I think maybe we might come home with something to live with us in our home? maybe? please?

turd

So, we have returned from the land of eternal vomit. The throwing up thing that plagued Finley last week decided to pay visits to Jason and I as well, although piper was lucky and avoided it all; how? I don't know. Seriously, it was really awful and we are all just getting back on our feet.

Good thing this week was Spring Break 06! It was just what we needed to feel better. We spent last weekend disinfecting the house and then it was time to party. Monday found s at the park, Tuesday we went to Sea World (absolutely fantastically fun was had by all), Wednesday we chilled at home, Thursday was the zoo with Grammy, and today we went to the beach! It was a seriously great and fun week.

Piper was not bitten by the stomach sickies but had a very difficult week last week because it's no fun to have parents that can't get out of bed without throwing up, so needless to say, she was not at her best and didn't have what I would call a cheery attitude but who can blame her? Well, this week was a total turn around and she was so much fun to be with and talk with and just have fun. Bug and Birdie are really starting to get along and become friends which is something I had resigned myself to believing would never happen. They play together and laugh all the time and sing and dance and just love on each other and on me and daddy.

Jason and I have decided to tackle one house project each weekend. One project i am itching to start is our kitchen. I decided that I want to paint our cabinets white. The cabinets have a raised panel in each door and I want to use the magnetic chalkboard paint on some of the panels. has anyone ever used this product and if so, where you pleased with the results and do you have and advice or tips?

I've also been involved in a bunch of swaps lately and I need to properly thank and post picstures of what I've received. It has been so much fun.

Wow, this is a way boring post. Finley learned a new word: "Turd" She most likely picked it up from Piper calling her "turdface". nice.

Taking a sick day

I have never seen a child throw up so much. On Monday night Finley started throwing up around 11pm and continued to throw up every 20 minutes or so until 9am the next morning. We set up on the couch and I got to watch late night TV, not something I think I would ever choose to do again. Poor baby, she was so weak and limp and just wanted to sleep but everytime she would fall asleep she would wake up to throw up again. I was almost positive that she was going to end up in the hospital.

We went to the doctor the next morning (who just so happens to be her granpaw) and she was very irritable but that was a good sign because she had big fat tears which meant she was not dehydrated. He said is was probably a virus and gave her some medicine to stop the vomiting. The side effect of the med was that it would make her very sleepy (a very favorable side effect if you ask me) and would make her loopy. Well, when we got home it was like she was drunk. A crazy spring break college co-ed kind of drunk. Very funny. She slept the rest of the afternoon and there was no more throwing up so she ate a bit of dinner . The BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. She slept all night after another dose of medicine which was a suppository which I will never do again because it involved me shoving 3 tiny pieces up her tiny booty.

So today we are taking a sick day and hanging out at home but for any of you who have any children you know that it means I am the activity director and to keep the house from exploding I need to have something for them to do the majority of the day although they are playing very nicely right now on their own. Anyway, I found a recipe on Martha Stewart Kids for homemade fingerpaints and it looked easy and cooperative and I had all the ingredients on hand so off we go.

You just mix 4 tbs of sugar with 1/2 cup of cornstarch then add 2 cups of cold water and heat of medium heat until it gets thick, not very long. It continues to thicken as it cools. I divided it into those tiny plastic disposable containers then added whatever color Piper wanted and mixed it up and voila...Fingerpaints. So, so easy and Piper helped with the whole endeavor.

I can see myself making these as a gift for someone and including a homemade art smock and some homemade playdough and these crazy crayons which I think we might try this afternoon or tomorrow and some art paper. Fun! I would like a gift like that!

With my own two hands

The girls and I have been listening to the new Jack Johnson album Sing-A-Longs & Lullabies for the Film Curious George and we all really enjoy it. Jason had taken Piper to see the movie for Valentine's Day and it was funny to hear his opinion of the movie:

"Are all kids movies sad? It was sad, all I could think about was the girls and I almost cried."

This is one of my new favorites as I have been struggling with feelings of inadequacy as far as contributing to our society and taking care of the planet and issues dealing with poverty and injustice and on and on...I think that after you have children you are more aware of the atrocities that are happening. Kind of makes you want to be a child again when all you had to worry about was whether
or not you were going to be invited to a birthday party. I feel so much more responsibility now as an adult and a mother because it's my job to teach my own children to respect the earth and love all kinds of people and so many other things. It's a huge undertaking, I'm finding, to raise children that are aware and unselfish and responsible, but still free and vibrant and joyful. Can you be all of those things at once? You can try.

With My Own Two Hands
Jack Johnson and Ben Harper

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make it a better place
With my own two hands
Make it a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I'm going to make it a brighter place
With my own two hands
I'm going to make it a safer place
With my own two hands
I'm going to help the human race
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you've got to use
Use your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands
With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

Happy St. Patrick's Day

May the light always find you on a dreary day.
When you need to be home, may you find your way.
May you always have courage to take a chance
And never find frogs in your underpants.

Overheard in my house

Me: Piper, it's time to wash your hair

Piper: I can't Mama, because I'm sick

Me: What's wrong, Piper?

Piper: I'm sick because I have the feelings so I can't wash my hair.

pride

I went to a baby shower last night and I was surrounded by pregnant women and women with little ones and my heart ached for my girls. I missed them although the time away was fun, catching up with old friends, meeting new people and just taking a moment to breath and relax. Most of the women I visited with are former colleagues of mine from when I was teaching. It's funny how some things never change but other things are continuously changing. When I left the school I had a tiny one and she's now three with a little sister. It was a lovely shower.

The best part about it, however was when the mommy-to-be was opening her gifts. She has a little boy a few months older than Finley and now she is having a little girl. I'm not certain, but I'm fairly sure that I have never seen so much PINK in one place at one time. But the very very best part was when she opened my gift.

Now, I have just really started this crafting and sewing phase (I hope it won't be just a phase) where I actually make things for other people and not just keep things at home too embarrassed to show anyone else. For my friend I made a bib, 2 burp cloths, a blanket and a bag that held all the goodies. I also included some Baby Bee Burt's Bees baby potions and a book for the older brother. Most of the items I made were monogrammed with an "r" for the babe's intended name (boy am I glad that she hadn't changed her mind about the name). What was so great about it was when she opened it she said to me, "Shannon, where did you find these things that have the letter on it and such a cute print?" I felt hotness creeping up my neck to my face and answered nonchalantly (sp.?), "Oh, I made them," as not to draw attention to that fact. Her eyes got big and teary and then her mom announced to the whole party, "These are from Shannon, and she MADE them."

I was so so embarrassed and at the same time patting myself on the back. It felt really good to be complimented with the "oh, these are beautiful" and "you could so sell these" and "I'm calling you when I need a baby gift". It isn't very often that I feel such confidence and pride about something, like I really did it!

I hear Piper and teach Piper about the emotional coaching and putting words to her feelings and you will very often hear her say things like "I did it" or "I'm really excited" or "that make me very frustrated" and I think it is so good that she can express herself with these words and I'm trying to model it more for her but in the process learning it for myself. It's ok to feel really proud of something and toot your own horn once in a while. Not only is it ok, but it is important to "use your words" to give a voice to your feelings. Before you can be heard, you have to speak.

Hair and there

just so you know, Wednesday is my birthday, (shameless plug) two days from now...and I have some BIG plans. you'll have to wait and see but be on the lookout for something new with me.

oohhhh, and I get my haircut tomorrow by a new person. It is the same woman who cuts kellie's hair and her hair always looks good so it will be ok, right? Ever wonder why when women change hair people it's like a divorce? I feel like I'm sneaking around behind my hair stylist's back and cheating on her. so if you see her, tell her I've gone to the gym or had to work late.

I'm in the kitchen pouring some soy milk into a sippy cup for Piper after she has woken up from her nap and she rubs my leg and says,

"Mama, you're the best, the best maker of milk."

they're playing our song

Both of my girls have a "song". A song that I have been singing to them from the moment I knew I was pregnant. I have rocked them to sleep singing their song more times than I can count and each time is as special as the first time I sang their song to them after they were born. And each time I sing these songs to them they instantly recognize it and calm themselves no matter the situation. Sometimes, late at night, Piper's song was the only thing that worked to get her back to sleep. Do you have a song like that?

Finley's song:

Wildflowers by Tom Petty

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worries
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free

Piper's song: - this song was also sung in our wedding by a friend of mine.

The Water Is Wide (Traditional)

The water is wide, I can't cross over, and neither have I wings to fly.
Build me a boat that can carry two and both shall row, my love and I.

There is a ship and she sails the sea. She's loaded deep, as deep can be.
But not so deep as the love I'm in, I know not how I sink or swim.

Oh love is handsome and love is fine, the sweetest flower when first it's new.
But love grows old and waxes cold and fades away like Summer dew.

Build me a boat that can carry two and both shall row, my love and I,
And both shall row, my love and I.

project(s)

this is a gift for one of Piper's friend's birthday. An art smock made from canvas and cotton pockets (kind of lame fabric, I know...but I wasn't about to cut up my primo stash for this, selfish, i know). In the pockets are some watercolor pencils, oil pastels, paintbrushes, and also some watercolor paper to complete the package. The smock sewed up pretty quick and easy although binding is not my friend.

Piper making her modeling debut...the front

and the back

Also, a monster for Piper's friend Logan, hence the "L" on his tummy. He is flannel with felt and hand embroidered. Accompanying him was the book, Leonardo the Terrible Monster.

And another monster for Piper's friend Caiden. His favorite color is orange so he got a recycled Boppy pillow recovered in orange soft fleecy stuff. His eyes are felt and hand embroidered. He was accompanied by the book, Wiggle.

Too much information about my tatas

Well, it is a little difficult to follow-up that post from Bono but let me say it has got me thinkin...the wheels turning in my brain and I have decided that I must do something.

But for now, let's move on to more, ahem, pressing matters. I went bra shopping yesterday. Yes, I will be referencing the girls so tune out if you will be offended. My poor poor boobies. They have served me well, got me a man (although he really is a butt man), helped me keep that man, gotten me out of a few sticky situations, and nourished two babies. It is the nourishment that really got to them...actually the whole I'm pregnant and for some reason my boobs have to triple in size over night and them triple again and fill up with pounds, yes pounds, of milk and then be sucked dry. They've given up, the white flag of surrender has been waved and they are so depressed that they can only look down towards the ground. They need a savior, an uplifter, a crane if you will to restore them to their previous glory.

And so I enter the world's most over-hyped lingerie store with a cup half-full (haha, pun intended, I crack myself up sometimes) attitude and search for the bra of all bras that will restore my faith in cleavage. Part of my problem is that I don't fill up the entire cup that the measurements say that I am...it always gaps around the top, so the ever so patient sales woman who heard my entire birth story of both my girls and the subsequent tale of breastfeeding and into the benefits of breastfeeding and blah blah blah (I don't get out much without my kids) anyway, where was I? Oh, the sales woman directs me to their new "scientifically engineered" "amazing uplifter" of a bra. She continues to tell me about all of its features walking me through the bra as if it is a car that I am about to test drive and then it is on to the fitting rooms and I am full of hope and anticipation. This bra, this bra could change my life.

Have you ever tried on a water bra? Those are about the funniest things I have ever seen. My mom and I used to go shopping together and when we would try on bras we would practically pee in out pants from the humiliation that ensues from all the different style.

So there I am in the dressing room thinking this could be "the one" and I try it on. And I think...

Well, at least my boob aren't growing out of my chin from being pushed up so high. They are definitely prominent and there is definitely some cleavage going on and I do fill out the whole cup. It's soft enough and tagless which is good, but I dunno...I jut feel blah about it and so I decide to buy it along with another one that is more of an everyday bra whereas this is definitely a date bra, and if you don't know the difference, well then you need to look at yourself in your normal comfy bra that you wear daily and then try on one of those enhancer bras and have the girls at full attention ready to slay any man that comes within eye-poking distance - the date bra.

My tatas are happier today and thankful that I paid some attention to their plight. In the end that's all anyone really wants, right?...to be heard.

Bono's remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast

Thank you.

Mr. President, First Lady, King Abdullah, Other heads of State, Members of Congress, distinguished guests…

Please join me in praying that I don’t say something we’ll all regret.

That was for the FCC.

If you’re wondering what I’m doing here, at a prayer breakfast, well, so am I. I’m certainly not here as a man of the cloth, unless that cloth is leather. It’s certainly not because I’m a rock star. Which leaves one possible explanation: I’m here because I’ve got a messianic complex.

Yes, it’s true. And for anyone who knows me, it’s hardly a revelation.

Well, I’m the first to admit that there’s something unnatural… something unseemly… about rock stars mounting the pulpit and preaching at presidents, and then disappearing to their villas in the South of France. Talk about a fish out of water. It was weird enough when Jesse Helms showed up at a U2 concert… but this is really weird, isn’t it?

You know, one of the things I love about this country is its separation of church and state. Although I have to say: in inviting me here, both church and state have been separated from something else completely: their mind. .

Mr. President, are you sure about this?

It’s very humbling and I will try to keep my homily brief. But be warned—I’m Irish.

I’d like to talk about the laws of man, here in this city where those laws are written. And I’d like to talk about higher laws. It would be great to assume that the one serves the other; that the laws of man serve these higher laws… but of course, they don’t always. And I presume that, in a sense, is why you’re here.

I presume the reason for this gathering is that all of us here—Muslims, Jews, Christians—all are searching our souls for how to better serve our family, our community, our nation, our God.

I know I am. Searching, I mean. And that, I suppose, is what led me here, too.

Yes, it’s odd, having a rock star here—but maybe it’s odder for me than for you. You see, I avoided religious people most of my life. Maybe it had something to do with having a father who was Protestant and a mother who was Catholic in a country where the line between the two was, quite literally, a battle line. Where the line between church and state was… well, a little blurry, and hard to see.

I remember how my mother would bring us to chapel on Sundays… and my father used to wait outside. One of the things that I picked up from my father and my mother was the sense that religion often gets in the way of God.

For me, at least, it got in the way. Seeing what religious people, in the name of God, did to my native land… and in this country, seeing God’s second-hand car salesmen on the cable TV channels, offering indulgences for cash… in fact, all over the world, seeing the self-righteousness roll down like a mighty stream from certain corners of the religious establishment…

I must confess, I changed the channel. I wanted my MTV.

Even though I was a believer.

Perhaps because I was a believer.

I was cynical… not about God, but about God’s politics. (There you are, Jim.)

Then, in 1997, a couple of eccentric, septuagenarian British Christians went and ruined my shtick—my reproachfulness. They did it by describing the Millennium, the year 2000, as a Jubilee year, as an opportunity to cancel the chronic debts of the world’s poorest people. They had the audacity to renew the Lord’s call—and were joined by Pope John Paul II, who, from an Irish half-Catholic’s point of view, may have had a more direct line to the Almighty.

‘Jubilee’—why ‘Jubilee’?

What was this year of Jubilee, this year of our Lords favor?

I’d always read the Scriptures, even the obscure stuff. There it was in Leviticus (25:35)…

‘If your brother becomes poor,’ the Scriptures say, ‘and cannot maintain himself… you shall maintain him… You shall not lend him your money at interest, not give him your food for profit.’

It is such an important idea, Jubilee, that Jesus begins his ministry with this. Jesus is a young man, he’s met with the rabbis, impressed everyone, people are talking. The elders say, he’s a clever guy, this Jesus, but he hasn’t done much… yet. He hasn’t spoken in public before…

When he does, is first words are from Isaiah: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,’ he says, ‘because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.’ And Jesus proclaims the year of the Lord’s favour, the year of Jubilee. (Luke 4:18)

What he was really talking about was an era of grace—and we’re still in it.

So fast-forward 2,000 years. That same thought, grace, was made incarnate—in a movement of all kinds of people. It wasn’t a bless-me club… it wasn’t a holy huddle. These religious guys were willing to get out in the streets, get their boots dirty, wave the placards, follow their convictions with actions… making it really hard for people like me to keep their distance. It was amazing. I almost started to like these church people.

But then my cynicism got another helping hand.

It was what Colin Powell, a five-star general, called the greatest W.M.D. of them all: a tiny little virus called A.I.D.S. And the religious community, in large part, missed it. The one’s that didn’t miss it could only see it as divine retribution for bad behaviour. Even on children… Even fastest growing group of HIV infections were married, faithful women.

Aha, there they go again! I thought to myself Judgmentalism is back!

But in truth, I was wrong again. The church was slow but the church got busy on this the leprosy of our age.

Love was on the move.

Mercy was on the move.

God was on the move.

Moving people of all kinds to work with others they had never met, never would have cared to meet… Conservative church groups hanging out with spokesmen for the gay community, all singing off the same hymn sheet on AIDS… Soccer moms and quarterbacks… hip-hop stars and country stars… This is what happens when God gets on the move: crazy stuff happens!

Popes were seen wearing sunglasses!

Jesse Helms was seen with a ghetto blaster!

Crazy stuff. Evidence of the spirit.

It was breathtaking. Literally. It stopped the world in its tracks.

When churches started demonstrating on debt, governments listened—and acted. When churches starting organising, petitioning, and even—that most unholy of acts today, God forbid, lobbying… on AIDS and global health, governments listened—and acted.

I’m here today in all humility to say: you changed minds; you changed policy; you changed the world.

Look, whatever thoughts you have about God, who He is or if He exists, most will agree that if there is a God, He has a special place for the poor. In fact, the poor are where God lives.

Check Judaism. Check Islam. Check pretty much anyone.

I mean, God may well be with us in our mansions on the hill… I hope so. He may well be with us as in all manner of controversial stuff… maybe, maybe not… But the one thing we can all agree, all faiths and ideologies, is that God is with the vulnerable and poor.

God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house… God is in the silence of a mother who has infected her child with a virus that will end both their lives… God is in the cries heard under the rubble of war… God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them. “If you remove the yolk from your midst, the pointing of the finger and speaking wickedness, and if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom with become like midday and the Lord will continually guide you and satisfy your desire in scorched places”

It’s not a coincidence that in the Scriptures, poverty is mentioned more than 2,100 times. It’s not an accident. That’s a lot of air time, 2,100 mentions. [You know, the only time Christ is judgmental is on the subject of the poor.] ‘As you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.’ (Matthew 25:40). As I say, good news to the poor.

Here’s some good news for the President. After 9-11 we were told America would have no time for the World’s poor. America would be taken up with its own problems of safety. And it’s true these are dangerous times, but America has not drawn the blinds and double-locked the doors.

In fact, you have double aid to Africa. You have tripled funding for global health. Mr. President, your emergency plan for AIDS relief and support for the Global Fund—you and Congress—have put 700,000 people onto life-saving anti-retroviral drugs and provided 8 million bed nets to protect children from malaria.

Outstanding human achievements. Counterintuitive. Historic. Be very, very proud.

But here’s the bad news. From charity to justice, the good news is yet to come. There’s is much more to do. There’s a gigantic chasm between the scale of the emergency and the scale of the response.

And finally, it’s not about charity after all, is it? It’s about justice.

Let me repeat that: It’s not about charity, it’s about justice.

And that’s too bad.

Because you’re good at charity. Americans, like the Irish, are good at it. We like to give, and we give a lot, even those who can’t afford it.

But justice is a higher standard. Africa makes a fool of our idea of justice; it makes a farce of our idea of equality. It mocks our pieties, it doubts our concern, it questions our commitment.

6,500 Africans are still dying every day of a preventable, treatable disease, for lack of drugs we can buy at any drug store. This is not about charity, this is about Justice and Equality.

Because there's no way we can look at what’s happening in Africa and, if we're honest, conclude that deep down, we really accept that Africans are equal to us. Anywhere else in the world, we wouldn’t accept it. Look at what happened in South East Asia with the Tsunami. 150, 000 lives lost to that misnomer of all misnomers, “mother nature”. In Africa, 150,000 lives are lost every month. A tsunami every month. And it’s a completely avoidable catastrophe.

It’s annoying but justice and equality are mates. Aren’t they? Justice always wants to hang out with equality. And equality is a real pain.

You know, think of those Jewish sheep-herders going to meet the Pharaoh, mud on their shoes, and the Pharaoh says, “Equal?” A preposterous idea: rich and poor are equal? And they say, “Yeah, ‘equal,’ that’s what it says here in this book. We’re all made in the image of God.”

And eventually the Pharaoh says, “OK, I can accept that. I can accept the Jews—but not the blacks.”

“Not the women. Not the gays. Not the Irish. No way, man.”

So on we go with our journey of equality.

On we go in the pursuit of justice.

We hear that call in the ONE Campaign, a growing movement of more than two million Americans… left and right together… united in the belief that where you live should no longer determine whether you live.

We hear that call even more powerfully today, as we mourn the loss of Coretta Scott King—mother of a movement for equality, one that changed the world but is only just getting started. These issues are as alive as they ever were; they just change shape and cross the seas.

Preventing the poorest of the poor from selling their products while we sing the virtues of the free market… that’s a justice issue. Holding children to ransom for the debts of their grandparents… That’s a justice issue. Withholding life-saving medicines out of deference to the Office of Patents… that’s a justice issue.

And while the law is what we say it is, God is not silent on the subject.

That’s why I say there’s the law of the land… and then there is a higher standard. There’s the law of the land, and we can hire experts to write them so they benefit us, so the laws say it’s OK to protect our agriculture but it’s not OK for African farmers to do the same, to earn a living?

As the laws of man are written, that’s what they say.

God will not accept that.

Mine won’t, at least. Will yours?

[pause]

I close this morning on … very… thin… ice.

This is a dangerous idea I’ve put on the table: my God vs. your God, their God vs. our God… vs. no God. It is very easy, in these times, to see religion as a force for division rather than unity.

And this is a town—Washington—that knows something of division.

But the reason I am here, and the reason I keep coming back to Washington, is because this is a town that is proving it can come together on behalf of what the Scriptures call the least of these.

This is not a Republican idea. It is not a Democratic idea. It is not even, with all due respect, an American idea. Nor it is unique to any one faith.

Do to others as you would have them do to you.’ (Luke 6:30) Jesus says that.

‘Righteousness is this: that one should… give away wealth out of love for Him to the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for the emancipation of the captives.’ The Koran says that. (2.177)

Thus sayeth the Lord: ‘Bring the homeless poor into the house, when you see the naked, cover him, then your light will break out like the dawn and your recovery will speedily spring fourth, then your Lord will be your rear guard.’ The jewish scripture says that. Isaiah 58 again.

That is a powerful incentive: ‘The Lord will watch your back.’ Sounds like a good deal to me, right now.

A number of years ago, I met a wise man who changed my life. In countless ways, large and small, I was always seeking the Lord’s blessing. I was saying, you know, I have a new song, look after it… I have a family, please look after them… I have this crazy idea…

And this wise man said: stop.

He said, stop asking God to bless what you’re doing.

Get involved in what God is doing—because it’s already blessed.

Well, God, as I said, is with the poor. That, I believe, is what God is doing.

And that is what He’s calling us to do.

I was amazed when I first got to this country and I learned how much some churchgoers tithe. Up to ten percent of the family budget. Well, how does that compare the federal budget, the budget for the entire American family? How much of that goes to the poorest people in the world? Less than one percent.

Mr. President, Congress, people of faith, people of America:

I want to suggest to you today that you see the flow of effective foreign assistance as tithing…. Which, to be truly meaningful, will mean an additional one percent of the federal budget tithed to the poor.

What is one percent?

One percent is not merely a number on a balance sheet.

One percent is the girl in Africa who gets to go to school, thanks to you. One percent is the AIDS patient who gets her medicine, thanks to you. One percent is the African entrepreneur who can start a small family business thanks to you. One percent is not redecorating presidential palaces or money flowing down a rat hole. This one percent is digging waterholes to provide clean water.

One percent is a new partnership with Africa, not paternalism towards Africa, where increased assistance flows toward improved governance and initiatives with proven track records and away from boondoggles and white elephants of every description.

America gives less than one percent now. Were asking for an extra one percent to change the world. to transform millions of lives—but not just that and I say this to the military men now – to transform the way that they see us.

One percent is national security, enlightened economic self interest, and a better safer world rolled into one. Sounds to me that in this town of deals and compromises, one percent is the best bargain around.

These goals—clean water for all; school for every child; medicine for the afflicted, an end to extreme and senseless poverty—these are not just any goals; they are the Millennium Development goals, which this country supports. And they are more than that. They are the Beatitudes for a Globalised World.

Now, I’m very lucky. I don’t have to sit on any budget committees. And I certainly don’t have to sit where you do, Mr. President. I don’t have to make the tough choices.

But I can tell you this:

To give one percent more is right. It’s smart. And it’s blessed.

There is a continent—Africa—being consumed by flames.

I truly believe that when the history books are written, our age will be remembered for three things: the war on terror, the digital revolution, and what we did—or did not to—to put the fire out in Africa.

History, like God, is watching what we do.

Thank you. Thank you, America, and God bless you all.

I shot the sheriff

oh my goodness. Did you know that I use to be funny? I was perusing my archives and i thought, "did I actually wirte that? because i don't remember being that funny." i think it was the sleep depravation that comes along with a newborn and cracked bleeding nipples, because i obviously was delirious.

speaking of nipples, today at labschool as Piper and I were going to the art room to pick up her projects, we passed theblock room where one of the other mothers was breastfeeding her 3 year old. Yes, 3 year old. Now, I am all for the breastfeeding and such and I am actually still nursing Finley who is 15 months, but occasionaly and on no particular schedule and she isn't 3. It was just uncomfortable. I told myself not to judge, really, I did tell myself that, but you know...she's 3.

By the way, if you live around here where people stop to take pictures of the "Welcome to Cocoa Beach" sign (yes, i saw people doind this today on the side of the road) you should know that there is a local who is somewhat famous for being cooky. You may have met him. He is The Sheriff of Cocoa Village. He is dressed all in black a la Johnny Cash and on his lapel is a shiny gold plastic badge that he will point out as he introduces himself as "Howdy, I'm the Sheriff of these parts. Hold on to those children sos nothin happens to 'em." Right.

Well, we happened to run into The Sheriff in our local mall but he had abandoned his black ensemble although still wearing a cowboy hat and when we saw him he was holding out a bear in his hand. Without a word, he moved from person to person with a wide creepy grin and if you unfortunately made eye-contact he pressed the bear's paw which started a chain reaction of singing and wiggling (from the bear) and giggling (from The Sheriff). Yeah. ok. right.

My advice on how to deal with The Sheriff? Play along, it is way more fun.

Sonnet XVII

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Bug and Birdie and Pajama Pants

Happy Valentine's day everyone! We had a lovely day here...Jason took Piper on a date to the movies and then we had a delicious dinner and the girls received their gifts from me which had me working late into the night the night before. Jason and I were talking later about how we view this hloiday after having children and how our feelings have shifted from a romantic love on Valentine's Day to a more all-encompassing love for our family and friends. Piper, however, focused on her love of candy and desserts.

She's not a baby anymore

Piper is 3!!! It has been a gradual aging over the past few weeks as she has become not the eager-to-please 2 year old she once was, but the independent and spirited little girl who is "three years old, mama."

The party was a success on all accounts and I think that everyone had fun. We rented a big bouncy castle and painted flowerpots and planted strawberry plants and ate cake and opened presents, meeting all the requirements of a birthday party. I don't think there were any tears and Piper was an excellent hostess.

Last night was our little family party. It's like we spend a whole week celebrating birthdays in this family. I think Piper got more presents last night just from us and her grammy and grandpaw than she did at her party with her friends!

She's three. I am still wrapping my head and heart around that fact. What I want for her is all the extraordinary things about life to be hers. I want her to feel special and unique and loved and safe. I am so in love with this little girl...Her laugh, her smile, her singing, even her pouting.

What she doesn't know is that on her birthday, I was the one who received the gift...the gift of this perfect little girl. She is amazing, my bug.

Tie One On

I've joined this group, Tie One On, that makes an apron each month and each month has a new theme. January was an apron from old clothes, so, I used and old pair of jeans and an old dress and an old belt and voila! - an apron. No tthe most original idea, but very easy and quick to make.

Miniswap

I've decided to participate in my first swap and I am so excited. It's a wonderful idea created by Molly and we will be swapping things to make the cold rainy dreary days of winter a little bit warmer. What's great about this swap is that involves our children. Everything we send will be homemade witht the help of the bug and the bird. I already have a list going in my head that I need to get down on paper so that I don't forget anything.

In other news, Piper's birthday party in on Saturday but is in jepordy of being cancelled due to a 103.5 fever that sprouted up Wednesday night/Very early Thursday morning. Poor girl, no other symptoms so we'll have to see how she does today to determine the fate of the party that I have already spent a good chunk of change on (how nice to end in a preposition)
(well not anymore).

Oh and Finley fell down the stairs on Sunday. The whole flight of stairs. She busted he lip and that's it, not another scratch on her but I was on concussion watch the whole rest of the day and night.

busy bee

I've been busy the past few days with some sewing projects. I am not 100% satisfied with the results, but they are wearable and I am proud of them.

This is a skirt made from a pair of jeans. The waist still fit Piper but the legs were way short. The inset is a vintage tablecloth

Both of these projects were fairly easy and only took a max of a couple hours, less if you were to be left alone and uninterrupted but who lives like that?

Date Nite

Tonight was date nite for me and jason and especially because he had been gone all of last week, we decided to go somewhere for a quiet dinner and there aren't really any movies that we feel like wasting money or, more importantly, time on, Jason hada plan of his own for what we were going to do after dinner.

So, we're driving and he takes me to this gazebo that is at the end of a dock overlooking the Banana River that just so happens to be at a hospital. This place has great significance for us as a couple. Jason used to come to this place before we started dating to gain inspiration for his life and his goals.

Then when we started dating, a few date into our relationship, he took me here to "come clean" about all the questionable things he had done in his past, his "skeletons in the closet." He didn't want to get to deep into a relationship with me only to have it unravel when I found out things he had done (that weren't really all that bad anyway).

The next time he took me to this special place was the night that he proposed. I thought when we got there that that was the place that he was going to propose and when he didn't I was kinda upset, actually I was disappointed and mad at him and sulked and pouted (which I am quite good at doing) all the way through dinner. He did porpose and it was beautiful...on my parents' dock lit with torches over the river in the summer with the crickets and water lapping against the wood and the air hot and heavy with humidity, the only other light coming from the moon reflecting on the water...

The next time I had a view of the gazebo was from my hospital room on the maternity floor the night I gave birth to Piper. And then from the emergency room entrance as I checked into the hospital to give birth to Finley.

And then tonight. We have come so far and I'm proud of our little family. Jason has become the best kind of father who is loving and tender and nurturing and compassionate. We were talking in the car on the way to dinner about how men and women differ in their ways of thinking about their children and their emotions toward their children. He talked about the feeling of needing to provide and the responsibility it was to care for his children. I talked about the primal instinct to protect and care and nurture my babies and the love that causes my heart to feel like it will literally burst in my chest.

Tonight when we returned home, Piper was still awake (we weren't surprised) and I layed down with her while I read to her and put her to sleep. I don't normally lay next to her but I did tonight and as I layed there I felt her warm breath on my arm and felt her tiny hand in mine and then... my cup runneth over.

Tablecloth + t-shirt = dress that needs more work

Jason has been absent this week as he is doing work on-site for one of his clients in an undisclosed location. So, here I am alone at home with the girls and wouldn't you know there are both sick with runny noses and coughs and the kind of snot that is putrid green and sticky like glue and everywhere.

It is a great time for me to sew a dress for Piper, right. For some reason I decided to take on this project this afternoon and after 3 failed attempts I finally almost finished it but it needs a little flair. It is a my own creation although very simple. I took a vintage tablecloth and cut it up to make a skirt that I sewed onto the a plain white t-shirt that I got from walmart (hell on earth) that I cut a bit off the end. It actually turned out pretty cute and will be cuter after I add a sash (maybe) and some appliques (maybe) made out of the scraps of the tablecloth.

I am not a seamstress in any definition of the word and I only proved that more to myself this afternoon as I tried and failed and tried again and failed again and so on. My mother did not sew and so I am self-taught and apparently I am not a very good teacher unless I am teaching phonics "special sounds" and then, well, I kick ass.

Anyway, the flaw I encountered was too much fabric. I hate gathering and bunching because I can never do it and it didn't help that I had twice the amount of fabric I needed. So I ended up cutting the amount of fabric in half and then it sewed up real quick.

here it is...I think I need to hem it up a bit and I'll be making another one tomorrow (maybe) since I know the tricks now it should go faster than today. And it looks better when the Bug is wearing it.

I wish I was good at this kind of stuff. I wish I had time to invest in getting better. But in the end, I rather be pushing my girls on the swings than hurting my back hunched over a machine.

Favorites January Favorites

Haven't done one of these in a while so here goes:

1. The Dyson vacuum. It pretty much sucks up anything; however I have an area rug in our family room that has pulls in it from velcro and the dyson gets caught up on it and won't run over it.

2. Strawberries. It is strawberry season here and we are already enjoying the fruit by itself and strawberry shortcake, yum! I think this is also what prompted Piper to want a "Strawberry Shortcake" birthday party. Rest assured I am not buying into that kind of commercialism and buying all the crap that goes along with that theme. We will be doing strawberry related activities and maybe I'll buy the plates but that's it!

3. My baby Piper. She's gonna be 3 this month.

4. Fleetwood Mac

5. Going to the gym. Yes, I am exhausted, but it's a good exhausted.

6. Simple Green cleaning products. They're non-toxic and actually work on dried up oatmeal on the ceiling.

7. A baby that is now walking.

8. I still really love my car. A friend of mine called me up last week and said, "I am almost at your house and I want to show you my Christmas present." Well, she pulled up in a beautiful brand new minivan. Nothing against minivans, but I just can't do it. She said to me, "Now I really feel like a mom." and I said to her that maybe I should look at one of these mom-mobiles and she said, "Shannon, I don't think you're ready for this yet." I don't think she could be more right and I don't think I will ever be ready. The features are wonderful and the roominess is fantastic, but no, I can't do it.

9. Children's Triaminic Night time cough and cold. For those of us who like to get some sleep without waking to the sounds of someone coughing up every organ in their body.

10. These cutey-patooty t-shirts. I like this company and I have some of their maternity pieces that are stylish and comfy. I ordered a t-shirt for Bug and Birdie!

Random Observations

I had to get gas this morning and this guy getting gas diagonal from me actually unbuttoned and unzipped his pants, pulled them down, tucked his shirt in and then hiked said pants up extremely uncomfortably high and zipped and buttoned them back up.

I have been going to the gym 4-5 times a week since the new year and I have noticed a few things. There are definitely gym "groupies" who are there to be seen and to scope out others. It is sometimes intimidating but then I remember that I pushed out 2 kids and that my body is extraordinary for that reason alone no matter how fat I am. Then there are the older people and I like them. They are there to stay in shape and work hard and no other reason. They motivate me. So, there are times to go to the gym to get a good workout without the "playas" breathing down your neck.

Another observation about the gym: There are actually women who come to the gym with a full face of make-up and I just think...eewww. You can imagine if they are actually sweating then the make-up and the sweat will combine to form a sort of paste and that's just gross.

We have been church-hopping lately to find the right place for our family because our current church has become the not right place. We have been visiting the church that I grew up in and met Jason. It's nice because I feel sort of anonymous. There are a lot of people I know but I don't feel like I have to be all up in the church's business. I can go, drop my girls off in classes that have kids they can play with, sit down and worship without stressing out about some job I was supposed to do, and actually be ministered to and learn from a very gifted preacher.

Jason and I are closing in on 5 years of marriage and 8 years together. That amazes me. Marriage is hard work and I feel like we are really making a go of it. I love him more today than in our first few months of lustful emotional can't-live-without-you times. We have really been through crap this past year and we have actually come out better than before the crap. I feel like we are entering a new era in our family and it feels really good and really refreshing.

Piper is almost 3. She is like an actual kid now and not a baby, although she will always be my baby. She is so smart, an actual genius I think and so loving and fun.

Finley is walking now, watch out! She is always moving and always happy. Really. She loves to dance and shake her little booty.

My girls. I can't really explain the love that I have for them except to say that it is all-encompassing and all-consuming. I want to freeze them but then I think about al the things we have yet to do, I can't wait but appreciate that it is all in good time.

Nosaj

There was a summer while in college that I worked part time at a retail pharmacy type store. I only got 30 minutes for lunch/dinner and most of theother workers would bring their food with them but I usuallly went to my parent's house that was only 5 minutes away where my food would be waiting for me.

One night Jason wanted to ahve dinner with me and he told me that he would pick me up and we could eat together. He pickedme up and took me to a restaurant that I was sure was going to take more than 30 minutes but when we got there our food was waiting on the table for us and all we had to do was eat and then he took me back to work. he had called ahead and ordered for us and told them what time to haveit on the table and paid in advance. It is quite possibly one of the most thoughtful things he has done for me because he is so not a planner and he had to plan everthing down to the minute. That was the summer that we got engaged. For Jason:

"Nightswimming"
REM

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.

This Woman's Work

I wonder how many of us thought that when we signed up for this thing called "motherhood" that we would literally love so much that it physically hurt, that our hearts would feel so heavy in our chests and we would feel an immeasurable amount of joy.

It was only this Christmas that I started to think about and feel the pain that Mary must have felt when her baby was put on that cross. This tiny baby she held in her arms would grow up to die and she knew that from the beginning. I wonder if with each birthday she celebrated his life but also mourned that she would lose her son.

I bought this stupid Christmas CD for the girls to listen in the car with Rudolph and other really bad renditions of the typical secular songs, but the last song on the CD was put there just for me..."What child is this?" Have you ever really read the words of this song:

1. What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

For some reason, this year the song really affected me to think about Jesus as a baby and Mary, his too young mother, and what emotions she must have felt at His birth. I'm glad that God chose her because I would not have been able to do what she did.

In case you didn't know

the funniest show on tv has moved to Thursday nights at 9:30pm.

and the other funniest show is at 9:00pm.

Work it out

So, Jason got me a membership to the gym for Christmas and before you berate him, I wanted the membership as one of my goals before baby #3 is to get fit just so that I can get fat again. Anyway, I do want to look good in a swimsuit and I feel like one thousand times better when I am in shape. I have gone everyday since well...I have been 3 days in a row and today I took a break because my body is in shock. Is it normal not to be able to walk because your calves are burning and in such excruciating pain that you think you are going to throw up?

Funny story...on my way to the gym I was driving and reaching for something on the floor of the passenger side and I twisted my arm and head in such a way simultaneously that I thought I was going to pass out because of the pain. This was on the way to the gym.

In my quest for a drop dead sexy body I decided that I needed to have the appropriate music to keep me motivated and since I received numerous itunes giftcards for Christmas I decided to spend them. And so I present my workout playlist...feel free to add suggestions and critiques:
